Greater Washington DC will be an initial launch market for the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range. Chevrolet will deliver more than 100 Volts to several utilities across the US—including Pepco and Dominion, which serve Washington DC and its suburbs—as part of an extended demonstration program.

The XR Extended Range product, using NMC Li-ion cells, allows longer distances between charge events. Proterra’s configurable EV platform, battery and charging options make its buses well suited for a wide range of transit and campus routes. Proterra has demonstrated that this option can travel more 700 miles in 24 hours.

In the US, GM has found that Chevrolet Volt demonstration units are a popular showroom draw for dealers as they let consumers look, touch and drive the electric car with extended-range capabilities. GM says that this is part of its plan to gain exposure for the vehicle and the Chevrolet brand.

The arrangement will be announced at the New York Auto Show, where the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range will be on display. Chevrolet has previously announced that Volt sales will start simultaneously in California, Michigan and Washington DC, with other markets to follow.
