Students were encouraged to explore a variety of solutions including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, electric, and extended range electric vehicles. The system incorporates a compact, lightweight, 3 kW fuel cell power system supporting the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery system. The present system is designed to extend the prototype vehicle’s driving range by 50%. This prototype extended range EV is being used by the company for technology valuation and testing.

University students from The Ohio State University earned top honors at the 2009 finals of the EcoCAR : The NeXt Challenge competition in Toronto, Canada for their design of a Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). While each of the 17 EcoCAR designs is unique, the common attributes include: Li-ion battery technology.

Many continue to pay more attention to far-off hydrogen fuel cells than to this immediate solution. Fuel cell cars should be plug-in hybrids so that the fuel cell is used only for extended range, and the fuel cell stack and hydrogen storage can be smaller. Lithium-Ion batteries share many characteristics with NiMH.
