ŠKODA AUTO, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is introducing a smart energy storage system using second-life batteries from electric vehicles. The system stores sustainably generated electricity in used batteries that come from the all-electric SUV ŠKODA ENYAQ iV as well as the plug-in hybrid models SUPERB iV and OCTAVIA iV.

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in late February demonstrated a 20-kilowatt bi-directional wireless charging system installed on a UPS medium-duty, plug-in hybrid electric delivery truck. ORNL’s bidirectional technology is fully compliant with grid power quality standards.

Expanding its portfolio of solutions for the marine electrification industry, Leclanché is introducing a new “ports and harbor” infrastructure solution enabling hybrid and fully electric vessels to fast charge when returning to port. The agreement with Leclanché’s Stationary Solutions group provides the complete recharging infrastructure.

GE’s Energy Storage business announced $63 million in new Durathon sodium-halide battery orders since the business launched in July. In its first weeks of operation, the business secured 10 new telecom customer orders across several regions, including Africa, Asia, India and the US powering a total of more than 3,500 cell towers.

Li-ion battery maker A123 Systems will supply a Grid Battery System (GBS) to Maui Electric Company (MECO), a utility serving residents and businesses on the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai in Hawaii. The system, NSTAR’s first battery energy storage project, is proposed for installation at a substation in Medway, Mass.
