General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. With rising gasoline prices, I believe the demand for freeway capable electric vehicles is going to increase over the next few years. The Saturn came up a distant second, but everyone agreed that the Civic was the best. I hope this project furthers his vision of emission-free electric vehicles for people.

There is more to Dan Neil's recent LA Times column than a favorable review of yet another gasoline-only hybrid. As underscored last month when GM announced it would build a plug-in hybrid version of its Saturn Vue, the logic of electric propulsion is compelling. He likes the Nissan Altima Hybrid well enough.

As part of the culling, GM has the option to re-badge vehicles from the non-core brands, such as the Pontiac G8, Opel Insignia and Saturn Vue. mpg in 2016, GM’s short term answer is to get greater mileage out of existing gasoline engine technologies.

The newly introduced GMC Terrain ( earlier post ) became the latest GM North American model that will feature a fuel-efficient gasoline direct injection (DI) engine in 2010. The increased combustion efficiency and control helps to reduce emissions, particularly during cold starts, which is when the bulk of emissions are created.

The electric sofas and scooters were so much cooler - and quieter - than the gasoline powered stinkers that predominate. Contracts for lithium batteries for the plug-in hybrid Saturn Vue and the Chevrolet Volt have received much press. And in most places other toxic emissions would be lower as well.
