The Saturn version of the two-mode plug-in hybrid at the Milford Proving Grounds. There is more to Dan Neil's recent LA Times column than a favorable review of yet another gasoline-only hybrid. As underscored last month when GM announced it would build a plug-in hybrid version of its Saturn Vue, the logic of electric propulsion is compelling. He likes the Nissan Altima Hybrid well enough.

The electric sofas and scooters were so much cooler - and quieter - than the gasoline powered stinkers that predominate. The plug-in Priuses are almost doubling the fuel efficiency of Google standard Prius fleet, getting 74 MPG rather than 41 MPG. And in most places other toxic emissions would be lower as well.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles.
