As expected, the combination of fewer diesel registrations and more SUVs continued to have an impact on emissions. Despite an increase of EV models contributing positively to emission levels, the move away from diesel had a negative impact, one that the market could not offset. Battery electric cars emit less greenhouse gases and air pollutants over their entire life cycle than petrol and diesel cars, according to a European Environment Agency (EEA) report. Emissions are usually higher in the production phase of electric cars, but these are more than offset by lower emissions in the use phase over time.

The V70 plug-in hybrid demonstrator highlights Volvo’s current PHEV architecture: front-wheel drive combustion engine, electric motor on the rear axle. The V70 diesel PHEV is projected to support up to a 50 km (31 mile) all-electric range—sufficient to cover the daily transport needs of 75% of European drivers.

Sweden-based international mining and minerals group LKAB has identified significant deposits of rare earth elements in the Kiruna area in the far north of Swedish Lapland (some 200 km north of the Arctic Circle). Without mines, there can be no electric vehicles. As of 2035, sales of gasoline and diesel vehicles will be prohibited.
