British Airways, in partnership with the Solena Group , will establish Europe’s first plant for sustainable jet-fuel and plans to use the low-carbon fuel to power part of its fleet from 2014. The global merchant fleet currently consumes around 330 million tonnes of fuel annually, 80-85 per cent of which is residual fuel with high sulfur content. For example, shifting from AC to on board DC grids would allow engines to operate at variable speeds, helping to reduce energy losses.
