Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha—have launched the “Advanced Hydrogen Energy Chain Association for Technology Development”(AHEAD) along with the world’s first Global Hydrogen Supply Chain Demonstration Project. Hydrogen will be sourced in Brunei and transported by ship to Kawasaki in liquid form at ambient temperature and pressure.

A large-scale demonstration converting biocrude to renewable diesel fuel has passed a significant test, operating for more than 2,000 hours continuously without losing effectiveness. Researchers at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Materials Science and Technology Division have demonstrated novel NRL technologies developed for the recovery of CO 2 and hydrogen from seawater and their subsequent conversion to liquid fuels. The gases are then converted to liquid hydrocarbons by a metal catalyst in a reactor system.

Evonik Industries has demonstrated the use of bacteria to convert syngas to pure 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (2-HIBA) under industrial conditions. Both the chemically-produced and biotech-produced products can be converted to methyl methacrylate (MMA). 2-HIBA is a precursor used in the manufacture of PLEXIGLAS. —Thomas Haas.
