Groupe Renault, Connected Energy install EV charging with 2nd-life batteries at highway rest areas

Green Car Congress

UK-based Connected Energy and Groupe Renault have installed two quick-charge stations based on Connected Energy’s E-STOR energy storage technology on highways in Belgium and Germany. The E-STOR technology developed by Connected Energy uses second-life batteries from Renault electric vehicles.

Connected to the grid or even off-grid, the station can charge up to four electric cars simultaneously, based on the principle of a ‘power bank’, two with DC quick charging. By contrast, when it is permanently connected to the mains power grid, the battery pack continuously and independently recharges itself.

Siemens Exploring Charging at Up to 300 kW for EVs; 6 Minutes for an EV Recharge

Green Car Congress

The long-term goal is to achieve up to 300 kW of charging capacity—enabling a quick recharge in roughly 6 minutes. The development engineers are also investigating how the constant switching on and off of the batteries affects the power grid; the harmonics this generates could knock the grid out of sync.

Researchers developing DC micro smart grid for charging EV fleets; Li-ion, redox flow batteries and renewables

Green Car Congress

Up to 30 electric vehicles at a time can recharge in Fraunhofer IAO’s parking garage. The aim of charge@work is to design a micro smart grid (MSG) capable of supplying the EV fleet with electricity produced exclusively from renewable sources. Under normal conditions, this stabilizing technology will be particularly important as the power grid is expected to rely more and more on variable renewable resources such as wind and solar technologies. If a million owners plug in their vehicles to recharge after work, it could cause a major strain on the grid.

Arizona State University Professor’s Work to Stabilize the Grid Pays Off

Cars That Think

Whenever new technologies are introduced into the power grid, there’s always a chance they could disrupt the system, possibly even leading to blackouts. Finding ways to deal with the impact on the grid caused by incorporating renewable energy has been the focus of Vijay Vittal ’s research for nearly 20 years.
