BP and Davy Process Technology announced collaborations with three EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractors to promote the commercialization of the BP/Davy Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Process. The BP/Davy fixed-bed FT process produces diesel, jet fuel (JP8) and naphtha from natural gas, biomass- or coal-derived syngas.

The contract is one of the first major commercial agreements in the US for the sale of liquid transport fuels made from coal. The Medicine Bow project will use Carbon Basin coal optioned from DKRW partner (and coal mine operator) Arch Coal to produce refined hydrocarbon liquid products.

The LCFS requires oil producers, importers and other fuel providers gradually to reduce, on a full-fuel lifecycle basis, the carbon intensity (CI) of their transportation fuel mix (measured in gCO 2 e/MJ) by from 0.25% in 2011 to 10% by 2020. The plant was originally fueled by coal but was converted to natural gas in 2010.

Among the new pathways to be considered is the production of renewable diesel from Australian tallow at Neste Oil’s Singapore plant. The CI of a fuel is determined by the sum of all greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production, transportation, processing and consumption of a fuel (its pathway). Earlier post.)

Four years ago, the professor at the University of California at Davis and a team of engineering students created a plug-in vehicle.
