As part of several technology demonstration projects under study, Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) has purchased six Coulomb Technologies electric vehicle charging stations from Carbon Day Automotive, Chicago, Ill. Last year, MGE purchased one of the state’s first plug-in hybrid cars.

FedEx is targeting battery electric technology for vehicles in its fleet covering less than 5,000 miles per year. is expanding its alternative-energy vehicle fleet with the first all-electric FedEx parcel delivery trucks in the United States. Two of the new all-electric trucks come from Navistar, and are being assembled in Indiana.

Ford detailed seven of the 13 new global electrified vehicles it plans to introduce in the next five years, including hybrid versions of the iconic F-150 pickup and Mustang in the US, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Transit Custom van in Europe and a fully electric SUV with an expected range of at least 300 miles (483 km) for customers globally.

The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies. The program includes the installation of 10 alternative fuel refueling sites (two B20, one Electric Recharging, and seven CNG). Total DOE award: $15,000,000.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is awarding $100 million in Economic Recovery Act funding to 43 transit agencies for projects to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from both vehicles and facilities. The project includes quick-charging stations at this terminal layover in route to recharge bus batteries.

T his week's meeting of the Electric Drive Transportation Association in Washington was accompanied by some significant announcements. Plug-in vehicles would combine today’s new electric-flex fuel (gas and/or biofuels such as ethanol) hybrid technology with a larger battery that could be recharged by plugging it into a standard wall sockets.
