Since its launch in December 2010, owners of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car have steadily racked up miles driven solely on electricity from the grid. They recently reached a significant collective milestone: more than half a billion electric miles.

GM is using five used battery packs from Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric cars to help power the new General Motors Enterprise Data Center at the Milford Proving Ground. Even after the battery has reached the end of its useful life in a Chevrolet Volt, up to 80 percent of its storage capacity remains.

Chevrolet plans to produce 10,000 Volt extended range electric vehicles by the end of the 2011 calendar year, and an additional 30,000 Volts during the 2012 calendar year, according to Volt Marketing Director Tony DiSalle, who made the announcements during a live video webcast 1 July. According to the agreement, GE will also purchase GM’s Chevrolet Volt, an electric vehicle with extended-range capability, for use at its China headquarters campus in Shanghai. General Motors plans to begin selling Volts in China before the end of this year.
