Lexus invented the idea of a luxury hybrid utility vehicle in a version of its RX crossover well over a decade ago, but sales haven't been strong of late. Cheap gasoline, better fuel efficiency from all types of vehicles due to rising CAFE rules, and a lack of interest in hybrids have all hurt the latest version of the RX Hybrid.

These European designs are perfectly good EVs, although their limited battery range and high price compared to the gasoline versions are major drawbacks. This marketing choice by Ford is either a very bad idea (brand dilution) or a genius plan to move the pony car into the modern era. Not easy or cheap, but it has worked so far.

Its price still hasn’t been announced, but most expect the entry-level 150kW/265Nm single motor FWD (with 516km range) to cost over $70,000. High specification or not, Australian Toyota loyalists aren’t used to paying that much for a RAV4-sized SUV. Judging by how all-encompassing it is, it won’t be cheap.

Toyota’s BZ4X electric SUV won’t arrive in Australian showrooms until February 2024 as the car giant’s first full EV suffers yet another delay. The price Toyota will ask for its first battery-electric offering remains a mystery, although Hanley has previously warned: “It’s not going to be cheap.”
