A new safety standard just passed in China may soon have a considerable impact on e-bike fire safety. With the vast majority of battery fires originating from poorly produced Chinese batteries designed for ultra-cheap e-bikes and e-scooters, it appears the Chinese government is attempting to address the issue head-on.

Although Tesla says it will be available for sale, this means EV owners with problematic charge port locations would have to buy it, and it probably won’t be cheap.

The logic there is that the stuff is going to get banged up off-road, so it might as well be unpainted and cheap to replace. This greatly improves usability.

Priced around $45k when new in 2018, a couple are on sale now for $25,000, one with just 22,000km on the clock and range of 300km. Dedicated city cars with cheap-feeling cabins, but rarer than a Pagani Zonda on our shores.

Speaking of home battery solutions, GM Energy also plans to sell one of those, though that unit won’t be for sale until later this year (same with solar integration, which will also come this year). That’s important, because the system isn’t cheap. Batteries will be available in 10, 17, and 35kWh packages.
