UPS is targeting a 20% improvement in fuel economy for its US package delivery fleet from 2000 to 2020. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) researchers, as part of a Navistar SuperTruck I team, helped design a new type of tractor trailer truck that improves fuel economy by 124%, compared to heavy vehicles on the road today. On a track test, the new SuperTruck I vehicle achieved 13 mpg (18.1 per gallon annually.

Built for Honda by Peterbilt Motors Company, the EPA Smartway-certified Model 386 hybrid truck is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 45 tons per year, as compared to its diesel counterpart. The hybrid truck uses a parallel diesel-electric hybrid system developed by Eaton Corporation.
