Then, as now, wind farms are operating off the world’s coasts—but not all of these offshore sites are connected to the mainland via underwater power cables. Sweden’s Vattenfall is aiming to build an offshore, hydrogen-producing wind-turbine demonstrator in the same area.

Fred gave a very informative PowerPoint on his green building philosophy and practices and educated the Commissioners on the BuildIt Green process. Nor did the Commissioners have any ideas for incentives or fast tracking possibilities to encourage more green building in Torrance. Fred graciously said he would.

As a bonus, the tech onboard the balloons runs on solar power. The wind part of the project plans a total of 3,000 megawatts from wind farms it will build in three counties in New Mexico. The transmission line will sidestep the growing difficulties of connecting renewable-energy sources to the power grid.
