EVs will drive down the costs of owning a vehicle and give New Zealand more energy independence. Today signals that New Zealand wants to be part of that transition, and avoid becoming a dumping ground for dirty second-hand vehicles from other markets. This makes so much sense for a country with our access to renewable energy.

The scheme which officially launched yesterday got off to a shaky start as Honda and other carmakers sort to clarify whether they were expected to bear the cost of the scheme alone or whether they could share the cost with their dealers, but this has not been permitted.

The simple reason is it can compete against luxury midsize SUVs from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW, and beats them in several areas, not the least of which is costing $15,000 to $20,000 less. Heck, I had people comment they thought I was driving a Bentley. Our road tests are based on this one-week drive of a new vehicle.
