Total US sales of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs)—battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric—have increased in recent years, but still represent only about 0.7% of new vehicle sales in 2014 so far, up from 0.6% Several states offer tax incentives to reduce the upfront cost of PEVs to consumers.

Out of 82 BEVs and PHEVs that are either currently available for sale in the US, or expected to be so by the end of 2022, 67 of them, or 81.7%, have a base manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) higher than $39,999, according to new analysis from EVAdoption. Fifteen or 18.3% have a base MSRP below $40,000 and 31 or 37.8%

And I’m one those million since they’re counting plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as well as full battery electrics. California’s plug-in vehicle sales tally is impressive: 663,014 battery electrics (62.9%). Toyota Prius Prime PHEV – 14,275. Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV – 7,988. Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV – 4,427.

Now of course it is important to point out several things: The base MSRP does not include delivery fees or taxes.

Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Another top-selling EV beyond Tesla models that is not included is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV, which likely saw 2021 sales of between 20,000-25,000.
