GM heat pump recovers energy from EV battery to power heating & propulsion while helping conserve range: Ultium Energy Recovery

Green Car Congress

GM is introducing a patented heat-pump in its Ultium-based EVs that captures and repurposes waste energy from the battery. Through the Ultium Platform’s energy recovery system, this waste energy can increase a vehicle’s range, reduce battery energy needed for heating, increase charging speed and even enable sportier driving.

Opinion: GMC Hummer EV’s EPA documents reveal that it’s still a vehicle of consumption and excess

Teslarati

I have to admit, I was a bit surprised when GM announced that it would start its new Ultium battery-powered electric vehicle push with the GMC Hummer EV. It’s almost ironic, or at least poetic to some degree, to see the Hummer EV become a vehicle that is just as excessive (and wasteful?) It just felt a bit strange.

Advantage EV

Electric Auto Association

For EV drivers, cold temperatures slow down the chemical reactions in battery cells, and because they don't have heat-producing engines, EVs must use additional battery power to warm their cabins (although these can be pre-heated in plugged-in EVs).

1-year customer field trials of FUSO electric Canter in Portugal show 64% lower costs, 37% reduction in CO2 given local power mix

Green Car Congress

In addition to delivering a 64% savings in operating costs compared to conventional diesel trucks, the Canter E-Cells also reduced CO 2 emissions by 37% compared to diesel, taking into account the current power production mix in Portugal. Top speed of the Canter E-Cell is limited to 90 km/h (56 mph).

GM details 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid powertrain design and operation

Green Car Congress

The exhaust gas heat recovery (EGHR) unit recycles waste exhaust heat that exits the engine and uses it to warm the engine coolant, improving engine efficiency, and also increasing the heat available for warming the passenger cabin.
