Shanghai GM has outlined the next phase of its “Drive to Green” product strategy—launched in 2008 ( earlier post )—for 2011-2015. The joint venture between GM and SAIC intends to reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions by 15% while improving performance 14% by 2015. Several targets announced in 2008 have already been achieved.

On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. In a post on GM’s FastLane blog, Vice Chairman Tom Stephens said that the company will apply plug-in hybrid technology to one of the four core brands remaining after the restructuring: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. Based on the current restructuring plan, GM is accelerating the wind-down or sale of Saturn to the end of this year.

If you want it to perform like a sports car instead of a slug in a sportscars skin, youre going to need that 10k for the ac drive system alone, and then maybe another 15k for a lithium battery pack. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. GM is developing more fuel-efficient vehicles. Thats short-sighted.
