They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. And EV owners would become entrepreneurs, selling electricity back to the grid. And indeed, that’s how promoters of vehicle-to-grid technology perceive the EV.

We need an interactive grid to make this work. We have to change the regulatory requirements to recognize the investments in the smart grid that have to be made. Right now we are operating with a grid that was not adequate at middle of the last century. Gasoline is too cheap. The challenge is demand creation.

The week I was in Shanghai, the Electric Vehicle Test Drive Center opened to the public in Shanghai Automobile City, a far suburb still reachable by subway. We really don’t need more cheap gas cars. Cars will undoubtedly be the last piece of the electric transportation matrix in China. But it is an anomaly.
