Audi is establishing a high-voltage battery development center at the Neckarsulm site. Audi is already developing high-voltage batteries for plug-in hybrids (PHEV) in Neckarsulm. A battery center for testing high-voltage storage technologies will go into operation by 2023.

Electric vehicles will make up the majority of new car sales worldwide by 2040, and account for 33% of all the light-duty vehicles on the road, according to a new forecast published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). BNEF suggested that only in Japan will PHEVs continue to play an important role after 2030.

Nissan is also planning to have 4 EVs on the market, including the Nissan LEAF, and says it will take global leadership in supplying batteries for electric drive. Nissan said it will also provide a second-life energy storage system with used EV batteries through the 4R business.

A Bloomfield, Michigan startup is developing light- and medium-duty series plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain systems—initially as conversions, but ultimately extending to an OEM basis.
