Production of the Audi Q4 e-tron has finally started in Zwickau. The fully electric compact model is the first electric SUV to be produced by Audi in Germany. At the multi-brand plant in Zwickau, the Audi Q4 e-tron will be rolling off the same production line as the Volkswagen ID.4

As of 2026, Audi will only launch all-electric models onto the global market, gradually phasing out production of its combustion models by 2033. Based on this clear decision made as part of its Vorsprung 2030 corporate strategy, Audi is now taking steps to prepare its global facilities for the production of all-electric cars.

The first Audi Q8 e-tron drove off the production line at the Brussels plant yesterday, 14 December, marking the beginning of an era for the new top model in Audi’s electric SUV range. The plant has been a model for sustainable production since the production of the Audi e-tron began.

Audi is testing factory vehicles powered by used lithium-ion batteries at its main plant in Ingolstadt. Like all automobile manufacturers, Audi is obliged by law to take back energy carriers after they have been used in cars. This saves space and also eliminates the high manual effort required to replace the batteries.

In April, Audi launched the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron ( earlier post )—the first compact electric SUVs from the brand. Audi is now adding two new versions to the range—the Q4 Sportback 40 e-tron, the model with the longest range in the series; and an all-wheel-drive version, the Q4 45 e-tron quattro.
