Africa can produce 50 million tons of green hydrogen a year by 2035, according to a new study by the European Investment Bank (EIB), International Solar Alliance and the African Union, with the support of the Government of Mauritania, HyDeal and UCLG Africa. The report was formally handed over to partners on 20 December.

An international team of researchers has used satellite images to map urban growth between 1985 and 2015. Urban growth rates were smaller in Africa, Australia and South America, averaging less than 1,000 km 2 yr –1. The soils in large areas of the Southern Hemisphere, including major portions of Australia, Africa and South America, have been drying up in the past decade, according to the first major study of evapotranspiration on a global basis. In these regions, microwave satellite observations indicate that soil moisture decreased from 1998 to 2008.
