More than half of the world’s cobalt currently comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has had a dismal record for protecting the environment and the well-being of the people who live and work around its mines. Oceanographers from MIT and elsewhere have been studying the environmental consequences of such operations.

Demand for these vehicles and their batteries is growing swiftly: In 2018, the global electric car fleet numbered in excess of 5.1 million, up 2 million from the prior year, according to the International Energy Agency.

COBC intends to provide conflict-free cobalt to address burgeoning demand for advanced batteries in smartphones and electric vehicles and is gearing up to begin cobalt trading early in the fourth quarter of 2018. COBC holds export trading licenses for cobalt, copper, and 3T metals (tin, tantalum, tungsten) from the DRC.

CBA has also undertaken a scoping study with a leading international engineering firm specializing in base metal refineries, to assess the potential conversion of the facility to nickel sulfate production, for modest capital expenditure. Nickel and cobalt recoveries averaged 99% and 96%, respectively, over SMP Refinery’s operating life.
