In the presence of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Berlin, Volkswagen signed a joint venture agreement with the Chinese automaker Anhui Jianghuai Automobile (JAC). The objective is to deliver 400,000 electric vehicles to the Chinese market in 2020 and 1.5 million electric vehicles in 2025.

China is the world’s largest user of lithium, accounting for 57% of global demand in 2019, and is also the biggest supplier of lithium converted products. Chinese EV sales through to July totalled 696,000 this year. However, the combined conversion capacities of these two market leaders is below 30% of total Chinese capacity.

In Shanghai, Ford Motor Executive Chairman Bill Ford and CEO Jim Hackett outlined the next phase of the company’s China expansion strategy, focused on SUVs, electric and connected vehicles, a streamlined business structure and closer connections to Chinese customers. Ford plans to open 100 new outlets next year.

The company said in a statement “Once the reliability verification and feasibility studies on mass production are completed, Hyundai Mobis will begin placing mass production orders from global automakers for implementation.”
