The fuel is free of sulfur and benzene and is therefore especially low in pollutants when it burns. Currently, only a small part of Global Bioenergies’ ton scale isobutene production is directed toward e-fuels, using Fraunhofer’s lab scale conversion unit. The company recently ordered 125 new fully-electric Semi tractors to be built by Tesla in 2019, one of the largest pre-orders to date.

In 2009, the ARB approved the LCFS regulation to reduce the carbon intensity (CI) of transportation fuel used in California by at least 10% by 2020 from a 2010 baseline. In 2015, the Board re-adopted the LCFS to address procedural issues, which began implementation on 1 January 2016.
