Kholod said that when a closed mine is flooded, water stops methane from leaking almost completely within about seven years. The study is the first to attempt to account for methane escaping from abandoned mines. In the United States in 2015, about one-third of abandoned mines were flooded.

Methane produced by serpentinization can escape through cracks and faults, and end up at the ocean floor. In other known settings the abiotic methane escapes into the ocean, where it potentially influences ocean chemistry. This is the case at Knipovich Ridge, where sediments cap the ocean crust at water depths up to 2000 meters.

In a 2015 interview with the WGBH Forum Network , Dudley Foster , an engineer who worked on Alvin , described the previous submersibles as “blimps.” The crew escaped unharmed, but the food they brought for lunch sank with the ship.
