California ARB: GHG emissions fell below 1990 levels for first time in 2016; down 13% from 2004 peak; transportation emissions up 2%

Green Car Congress

The state’s latest Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory shows that California emitted 429 million metric tons of climate pollutants in 2016—a drop of 12 million metric tons, or three percent, from 2015. Under Assembly Bill 32 passed in 2006, California must reduce its emissions to 1990 levels (431 million metric tons) by 2020.

CMU study finds controlled EV charging can reduce generation cost, but at greater health and environmental costs depending upon the generation mix

Green Car Congress

Results from the study also suggest that with sufficient coal plant retirement and sufficient wind power, controlled charging could result in positive net benefits instead of negative. High Wind Future: In this scenario, they modified the future case to add wind plants sufficient to produce 20% of generation.

US and China jointly announce GHG reduction targets; US to cut net GHG 26-28% by 2025, China to peak CO2 by ~2030

Green Car Congress

The Administration said that the ambitious target is grounded in analysis of cost-effective carbon pollution reductions achievable under existing law and will keep the United States on a trajectory to achieve deep economy-wide reductions on the order of 80% by 2050. The new US goal will double the pace of GHG reduction from 1.2%

Geely invests in Carbon Recycling Intl.; vehicles fueled by methanol from CO2, water and renewable energy

Green Car Congress

In late April 2015, Geely Auto deployed a first-of-its-kind fleet of 150 methanol-fueled taxis in the southern Chinese city of Guiyang in cooperation with the municipal government. Vulcanol is CRI’s brand name for renewable methanol, produced from CO 2 and hydrogen from renewable sources of electricity (hydro, geothermal, wind and solar).

Evidence from glacier ice: Until it was banned, leaded gasoline dominated the anthropogenic lead emissions in South America

Green Car Congress

The scientists found that lead from road traffic in the neighboring countries polluted the air twice as heavily as regional mining from the 1960s onwards. Apart from combustion of leaded gasoline, major sources of anthropogenic Pb emissions include mining, metallurgical processing, and coal burning. Picture: Paul Scherrer Institute.

IRENA, IEA study concludes meeting 2?C scenario possible with net positive economics

Green Car Congress

In REmap—IRENA’s global roadmap for the transition—energy demand by 2050 could be about the same as in 2015, due to significant energy efficiency improvements. Primary CO 2 emissions reduction potential by technology in the Reference Case and REmap, 2015-2050. trillion in 2015. Coal use would decline most rapidly.

EPA proposes rule for nationwide 30% cut in GHG from existing power plants by 2030 relative to 2005

Green Car Congress

Cutting particle pollution, nitrogen NO x , and SO x by more than 25% as a co-benefit. The value allocated here in EPA’s goal-setting formula was an average heat rate improvement of 6% for coal steam electric generating units (EGUs). EPA is only proposing goals for states with fossil fuel-fired power plants.
