The Trends report has been published annually since 1975 and covers all passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, minivans, and all but the largest pickup trucks and vans. In the analysis, EPA uses overall fuel economy in mpg equivalent (mpge) and tailpipe CO 2 emission values. of new vehicle production in MY 2013, according to EPA.

Among the top-level findings was that Model year 2013 vehicles achieved an average of 24.1 mpg increase over the previous year and an increase of nearly 5 mpg since 2004.
