BMW will offer a full hybrid version of its new 5 Series as early as next year, according to Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, speaking at the company’s 90 th Annual General Meeting today in Munich. BMW currently has launched two hybrids into series production, the X6 and the 7 Series.

The BMW i3’s 170 horsepower (127 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 N·m) of torque hybrid-synchronous electric motor, developed and produced by BMW, is electrified by a 22-kWh lithium-ion battery, good for 80-100 miles of driving. It will arrive in US showrooms in the second quarter of 2014.

At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit this week, Ford delivered first proof of that focus with the reveal of the new Ford GT carbon-fiber supercar, as well as the new F-150 Raptor based on the new aluminum F-150 and the Shelby GT350R Mustang. Ford has been selling hybrids and, later plug-ins, since 2004.

BMW unveiled the BMW i8 2+2 plug-in hybrid sports car ( earlier post ) today at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The i8—the first plug-in hybrid vehicle from the BMW Group—will have a manufacturer’s suggest retail price of $135,925 (including destination and handling) when it arrives in US showrooms in spring of 2014.
