Unfortunately for the current generation of electric vehicles, many will not be eligible for the grants, the government’s scheme is likely to assist the sales of the next generation of electric cars and hybrids (such as the plug-in hybrids) which by the government’s own confession are not expected to hit the UK roads until 2011.

Last week the UK Government announced a purchase subsidy of up to £5,000 for every electric car available from 2011. The subsidy is set to come into place in 2011, as the Government believe this is when eligible plug-in hybrids and long range electric cars will become mass-marketed.
