As part of the new technology to achieve this vision, the company disclosed plans to introduce a next-generation gasoline engine called SKYACTIV-X in 2019. This new proprietary combustion engine combines the advantages of gasoline and diesel engines to optimize environmental performance, power and acceleration performance.

A team from Northwestern University, with colleagues from UOP LLC, a Honeywell Company; Universita’ degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”; Argonne National Laboratory; and Ames Laboratory has developed a new hydrogenation catalyst that is highly selective for benzene, an aromatic—and known carcinogen—that is part of conventional gasoline.

Ethanol can only be used in a blend of up to 10% with gasoline, biodiesel is being limited to no more than a 5% blend with conventional diesel. It makes sense to focus on biofuel substitutes for diesel rather than substitutes for gasoline. Other feedstocks, such as switchgrass, could also be minor players. Commissioner Wright.
