The new study uses observations from 2003 to 2015 in spring, the cloudiest season, over the shipping route between Europe and South Africa. Past attempts to measure this effect from ships had focused on places where the wind blows across the shipping lane, in order to compare the “clean” area upwind with the “polluted” area downstream.

Although neither ice sheet is expected to melt completely anytime soon, their incredible scale makes even small changes consequential for the future of our planet.

In the summer, wind and ocean currents cause some of the ice naturally to flow out of the Arctic, while much of it melts in place. In 2003, 62% of the Arctic’s total ice volume was stored in multi-year ice, with 38% stored in first-year seasonal ice. The maps need to be refreshed regularly as science, technology, and the climate change.
