Laboratory proxies for real world automobile catalysts have shown that HNCO could be a trace intermediate in automobile catalytic converters during the warm-up phase. For the tests, they used a turbo diesel (TDI) engine from a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and operating on ultra-low sulfur diesel.
