Despite the appealing 2010 Milan Hybrid, the Mercury brand hardly springs to mind when you think "green car". Ford confirmed yesterday that Mercury will introduce a new compact car in. Now that's going to change.

Hybrid car sales may have slumped as the recession continues to take its toll on the car industry, but Ford has made itself the exception that proves the rule. The trend continued during September when Ford sold 26,016 hybrid vehicles – a 73 per cent increase on the 15,015 units it sold during the same period last year.

Green cars continue to be as badly hit as any during the on-going recession as sales of hybrid cars showed another dramatic year-on-year slump in April. Combined reported US hybrid sales from Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan and Toyota fell by 45.5 GM delivered a total of 1,534 hybrid vehicles in the month.
