Europe’s largest PEM hydrogen electrolyzer, has begun operations at Shell’s Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland, producing green hydrogen. Shell wants to become a leading supplier of green hydrogen for industrial and transport customers in Germany. The green hydrogen will also be used to help decarbonize other industries.

Grants will be disbursed from the Innovation Fund to help bring technologies to the market in energy-intensive industries, hydrogen, renewable energy, carbon capture and storage infrastructure, and manufacturing of key components for energy storage and renewables. residue streams, renewable hydrogen and biogas to methanol.

SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, the partners in the joint venture HYBRIT ( earlier post ), are preparing for the construction of a demonstration plant for the production of fossil-free steel on an industrial scale. Consultations have begun for deciding on placement of the plant in Norrbotten, Sweden.

Scania, a member of the Volkswagen Group, is developing a fuel cell refuse truck together with Renova, a waste handling company in western Sweden, fuel cell manufacturer Powercell Sweden AB, and JOAB, a manufacturer of truck bodies. The truck will feature a fully electrified powertrain as well as an electrified compactor.

PowerCell selected an Auto Thermal Reactor (ATR) technology to evaporate (not combust) the diesel and extract hydrogen-rich gas with gas purity well within the limits of what a low temperature PEM fuel cell can support in terms of CO. Downstream, sulfur is trapped and carbon monoxide is cleaned up while the hydrogen content is enriched.

HYON AS has, together with partners, been awarded grants under Norway’s PILOT-E scheme for the development and realization of two maritime projects; a high-speed ferry and a short-sea freighter. HYON is a joint venture established in 2017, owned wholly by Nel ASA, Hexagon Composites ASA and PowerCell Sweden AB.

In Europe, the JIVE 2 project (Second Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe) launched this week. For most of these cities, this will be the first venture into fuel cell bus operation and they will be supported in their endeavor by a number of seasoned industry experts as well as industry grouping Hydrogen Europe.
