Honda beat everybody to the production gasoline-electric hybrid game in the United States, putting the Insight in showrooms in 1999. Toyota followed with the Prius a year later, but it took GM until 2006 to introduce its first true gasoline-electric hybrid here.

The Prius mid-size gas-electric hybrid posted January sales of 8,121 units, down 28.6% Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 90,596 in January, down 38.9% to 341,113 units.
