There may be one negative knock-on effect of improving the fuel economy standards of our vehicles: fuel tax revenues could slump massively. According to a report by the Congressional Budget Office (logo, pictured), fuel economy standards proposed for 2017-2025 would cut revenues from petrol tax by 21 per cent in 2040.

The Civic GX was actually first introduced in 1998 and is the cleanest internal combustion vehicle certified by the EPA - it is around 90 per cent cleaner than the average petrol powered car. It has been certified as an Inherently Low Emissions Vehicle by the EPA and is the only natural gas powered car available in all 50 states.

Engineers at the VW Group are working on two 600cc two-cylinder turbo-charged units - one diesel and one petrol - with fuel economy predicted to be around 95mpg. This will leave carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions below 100g/km and the Audi won’t cost a penny under existing road tax rules.
