More energy-dense batteries coming in the near future aren’t just destined for fully electric vehicles. Combined with the expected expiration of Canada’s federal program in March 2025, it could prove a market test, as to whether more Canadians will keep buying EVs without thousands of dollars in incentives.

Under the federal program, buyers could get a $3,500 or $4,500 rebate, depending on how much more efficient their new car was. In McKinsey’s Building the Electric-Vehicle Charging Infrastructure America Needs report , if the United States meets its federal target of 50% of all vehicles sold by 2030 are zero-emission vehicles, “public charging would deliver more than 20 percent of the electricity EVs would use.”
