On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. GM’s identify in the US starts with its four core brands.

GM described its approach at the Washington Auto Show. A partial draft checklist of stakeholders and enablers to help guide cities in making their regions plug-in friendly suggested by GM includes: Draft Checklist for a Plug-in Ready City. GM will undertake similar efforts around the country in communities such as Washington, D.C.

GM will introduce the Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle with a starting MSRP of $41,000; after applying the Federal income tax credit of $7,500, the price drops to $33,500. When the battery runs low, a gasoline-powered range extender extends the driving range for 300 miles on a full tank of fuel.

GM has been saying for a while now that they had picked their supplier for the LiIon battery in the Volt, but they weren’t prepared to announce who it was. Chances are, GM will start with CP (hey, those are Chris Paine’s initials!), GM Reported Ready To Give Volt Battery Nod to Unit of LG Chem. that got the nod.

Answer: Tesla already is making the fully electric sports luxury Roadster; Nissan will manufacture the five-passenger all-electric Leaf from late 2010; Fisker will make the first deliveries of its luxury Karma later this year; and GM’s Chevrolet Volt is a four-passenger hatchback due at some dealerships later this year.
