Accessory loads contribute to the overall range capability, as more than 50% of “system on” time is spent at a speed of 0 mph where lighting and HVAC loads are still required. Foothill reports that there is still a lot of learning as the agency ramps up to a larger BEB fleet.

As part of the demonstration program, two Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicles will be handed over to the NYCDOT and three to the Port Authority to be used in their fleets. A fully charged Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicle is capable of running on electricity for approximately 13 miles (21 km) at speeds of up to 62 mph.

Forward-looking sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication helped maintain speed and spacing without driver intervention.
