Each university received $15,000 of the planning grant.

Lightning Hybrids tested two vehicles: a 2013 Ford E450 6.8-liter The testing was completed at the SGS Environmental Testing Corporation dynamometer facility in Aurora, Colorado. The essence is to replace a diesel-powered GMC 4500 shuttle with gasoline Ford E450s upfitted with the Lightning Hybrids system.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) selected six cost-shared University Advanced Combustion and Emissions Controls research and development projects totaling up to $13 million in DOE funding, subject to annual appropriations. The following projects were selected for award negotiation and will be cost shared at a minimum of 20%.
