A chemical engineer from the University of Houston is leading a $2.1-million Catalytic converters clean vehicle exhaust into nitrogen, water and carbon dioxide. Current catalytic converters use precious metals, including platinum and palladium, to eliminate the main pollutants emitted by internal combustion engines.

However, bio-oil, or pyrolysis oil, comprises many oxygenated organic chemicals with water-miscible and oil-miscible fractions. Woody biomass gave up to 36% carbon conversion to pure hydrocarbons at optimum conditions. This conversion presents more than 50% of the theoretical yield.
