CoolPlanet BioFuels, a start-up developing technology to convert low-grade biomass into high-grade fuels including gasoline, and carbon that can be sequestered ( earlier post ), claims it has achieved a conversion yield of 4,000 gallons gasoline/acre biomass in pilot testing using giant miscanthus, an advanced bioenergy crop.

As more fleets of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles go electric, there’s a growing awareness that building the necessary charging infrastructure will be a complex proposition, requiring specialized expertise and considerable capital. TeraWatt has only recently come out of stealth mode, and has yet to announce any major customers.

The trucks will be tested in various locations, including Google in the Bay Area, the City of Santa Monica and the Port of Los Angeles. The demonstration vehicles include tree maintenance trucks and a telephone pole installation truck. Electricore Inc., ZeroTruck will provide match funding of $948,424.

We’ve installed and commissioned, meaning they’re actually working, 35,100 H100 computers or GPUs—GPU’s the wrong word; they need a new word. We are also getting hyper focus on CapEx efficiency and utilizing our installed capacity in a more efficient manner. I always feel like a wince when I say GPU because it’s not GPUs.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.
