The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $8 million to communities in 21 states and Puerto Rico to reduce emissions from the nation’s existing fleet of diesel engines through the agency’s Diesel Emission Reduction Act ( DERA ) program. The electric buses will replace CTA’s oldest diesel buses and reduce greenhouse gases in communities that have experienced air pollution and other environmental health hazards, improving public health and quality of life. The non-profit Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) said that it is partnering on 18 of the projects.

Transitioning the fleet to all electric will eliminate emissions from diesel buses and emissions from shipping diesel fuel by barge 900 miles from Seattle. All of the replacements are diesel powered heavy-duty buses that are past their twelve-year life span. The buses will replace diesel buses that have exceeded useful life.

Clean Diesel’s ARIS system features a single-fluid return flow solenoid-actuated injector.
