Pennsylvania has awarded more than $3 million in Fuel Incentive Grants (AFIG) to 33 companies, counties and organizations making the switch to compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), or propane for medium to light-weight fleet vehicles. This year, AFIG grants focused on medium- to light-weight vehicles.

Nanomaterials company Pixelligent Technologies has been awarded a $1-million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant by the Department of Energy (DOE). The goal of this program is to develop a working prototype of a formulated oil that reduces engine wear and fuel consumption for the existing ground vehicle fleet.

PECO is expanding its fleet with new natural gas and hybrid electric models. The utility is participating in a national consortium that recently was awarded a federal stimulus grant to purchase plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and the company is buying more trucks to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) as well.

The $800,000 ($799,932) first-year grant, which was announced by Governor Edward Rendell on 29 January, is part of the State’s overall effort to invest in businesses that are creating clean energy and biofuels technologies.

The Lancaster County (Pennsylvania) Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) held a dedication and grand opening of its $4.8-million LCSWMA purchased the fleet in 2013 and transitioned them into operation last month. Converting its fleet also required LCSMWA to install CNG fueling infrastructure at its Transfer Station Complex.
