PACCAR announced that a Kenworth T680 fuel cell electric vehicle and a battery electric Peterbilt Model 579EV became the first Class 8 zero emissions vehicles to drive to the 14,115 foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. We are very excited about the work Kenworth and Peterbilt have done in the development of zero emissions technology.

Canada-based Loop Energy’s heavy-duty fuel cell range extender ( earlier post ) will power two new zero-emission hybrid-electric Class 8 drayage trucks that will operate for a one-year period as part of a FAST TRACK Fuel Cell Truck Project in southern California. —Ben Nyland, President and CEO of Loop Energy.

Agility Fuel Solutions (Agility), a leading global provider of clean fuel solutions for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, introduced the new fifth-generation ProRail CNG fuel system. Gen5 ProRail installed on a Peterbilt 567. ProRail systems are installed on one or both sides of the vehicle’s frame rail.

Supported by a $3-million California Energy Commission grant, the companies are working to convert a fleet of six, Class-6 International armored trucks into “Zero Emission with Range Extension” vehicles—PHEV trucks that operate with electricity and renewable natural gas (RNG). The CNG storage tanks are roof-mounted.

The companies have selected Marshall County, Mississippi, southeast of Memphis, for the joint venture’s factory, which will localize battery cell production for commercial electric trucks. It’s expected to create more than 2,000 US manufacturing jobs. The 21-gigawatt hour (GWh) factory is scheduled to begin producing battery cells in 2027.

Eaton Corporation has established a program to assist diesel truck fleet owners in applying for the $156 million in grants for diesel hybrid trucks that are available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Fleets are able to purchase multiple trucks.

Newsom signed a funding bill to invest $106 million in the construction of additional hydrogen stations through the end of the decade, for the first time backing stations for commercial vehicles as well as passenger cars.
