The contract award marks China as the site for the first worldwide commercial implementation of the TRIG technology with the goal of producing low-emission, coal-based electricity. TRIG coal gasification technology was co-developed developed by Southern Company, KBR Inc., that is managed and operated by Southern Company.

The Enerkem process has four steps: feedstock pre-treatment; gasification; syngas conditioning; and conversion. The syngas is converted to products using a sequential catalytic conversion process. Its commercial-scale demonstration facility in Westbury, Canada, which was completed in 2009, reached 1,000 hours of operation.

The companies have also signed a Testing and Optimization Agreement to optimize the compatibility of KiOR’s blendstocks with Chevron’s facilities. Rentech, the developer of a Fischer-Tropsch process for the conversion of syngas derived from biomass and fossil resources into synthetic fuels, specialty waxes and chemicals, has acquired a 25% stake in ClearFuels Technology Inc. This joint demonstration is anticipated to lead to the final design basis for the commercial facilities.
