The main factors contributing to the increase of new passenger cars’ emissions in 2018 include the growing share of gasoline cars in new registrations, in particular in the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. Moreover, the market penetration of zero- and low-emission vehicles, including electric cars, remained slow in 2018.

For the first year since monitoring started, gasoline cars became the most sold vehicles in the EU, constituting almost 53% of sales. Compared to 2016, the registrations of diesel cars decreased in all EU Member States except in Italy (+0.6 The difference between average fuel efficiency of gasoline cars (121.6 percentage point).

Average emissions for Germany, Britain, Italy, and Spain increased, ranging from a rise of 0.8 g/km for Italy. This was in part caused by marked changes in attitude and regulations around the use of diesel fuels which has had the unintended consequence of pushing people to drive higher-CO 2 -emitting gasoline vehicles.

6,028 people were questioned across six European countries; Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. By comparison, 66% of those polled have owned a gasoline engine vehicle and 38% have owned a diesel engine vehicle. It is targeting improved traffic flow and reductions in CO2 emissions through cooperative systems.
